Laying Tools or Shawl Pins Laying Tools. If you are using a floor or sit-on needlework frame, a laying tool is a must for pushing the sheen of silk and lay of other fibres to the next level. Suitable for all patterns worked with any 6 stranded (floss) cottons or silk such as DMC, Kreinik Silk Mori, Sampler Threads and many others. Cut 12 - 14 inch lengths, separate the 6 strands (ply’s) and recombine 2 ply’s (or more) to help align the threads for a smooth looking surface. How to Use a Laying Tool. For a sheen keep threads aligned and not twisted. As the loop of thread is drawn down to the fabric, the laying tool is inserted under the loop. The thread is stroked as the loop is closing to make sure the threads stay aligned, the stroking will increase the sheen when you work with silk. If you are new to stitching, try to keep the 2 threads in your needle untwisted. I automatically twist my needle a little every stitch to prevent twisting. Some people prefer to drop their needle every now and then to untwist the threads.
