Young people and those new to embroidry need projects that are easy and fast to work.  As a teenager I used to buy fabric for a dress and make it in such a hurry to wear that evening.  Mum was continuely nagging that seams should be neaten and turned, basting stitches should be used before machining 'not just pins'.  I just wanted a new dress, not heirloom sewn or tailored.  The patterns on this page are designed with young people in mind, they are projects for now.

Dorset Feather Stitches

Adults are very fixated on samplers made by little girls in the 16th Century.  The forget that the 16th Century were drawn on the fabric and children stitched over the drawing with cross stitches, or they followed a border already sewn on another's sampler.  Charts were not commonly used till Victorian times.

This Dorset Feather Sampler is the best form of sampler for a modern child. Stitched on linen, this helps with spacing stitches. Rick Rack tape is couched and decorated.  Many variations of stitches are worked using DMC #5, FAST work.  A scoll frame or q-snap may be used, but the loop stitches are easier worked in the hand.
